With the country’s energy landscape changing rapidly to include new players and new energy sources, and optimism abounding despite challenges, nonprofit the South African National Energy Association (SANEA) has marked the start of a new chapter by launching as a rebranded organisation that aims to be a leader in this evolving landscape.

This was highlighted by the association at its AGM on June 3, where all four resolutions passed with the majority, including the board’s proposal on rotation and reappointment of nonexecutive directors and the reappointment of the current auditors for the ensuing year until 2028.

For the former, the board has implemented a revised board rotational schedule that aims to ensure an appropriate balance of experienced and new directors, aligned with the three year term cycle and avoidance of excessive rotation in a single year.

As such, all directors whose terms were set to conclude this year will now continue serving under this updated rotation, as part of the requirement for stability and continuity as the association undertakes strategic imperatives as part of its rebrand.

With the rebrand, SANEA has adopted a new logo, as well as the slogan ‘Guiding inclusive energy progress’, which was developed in collaboration with local marketing agencies Bamboo and Ascent.

This aligns with SANEA’s goals of translating intent into actions and working with burgeoning South African enterprises and providing a platform for this.

With the rebrand, SANEA aims to move from a talk shop to a ‘do tank’.

The association is endeavouring to renew its model, modernise the brand and deliver visible, measurable impact.

This is in response to challenges of stagnated membership growth, some members viewing the association as no longer being relevant, an unclear value proposition in comparison to peer associations, a limited digital reach, event fatigue and missing voices of communities, labour and end-users.

SANEA is therefore looking to leverage its entrenched, over 100-year legacy and capitalise on its credibility, providing an impartial, cross technology voice in a polarised sector.

It will look to convene government, business, academia and civil society.

Opportunities are presented by a growing ecosystem of energy topics and a unique pipeline role owing to a youth skills deficit.

Four interlinked pillars underpin SANEA’s transformation, namely inclusive dialogue, convening credible research and insights, thought leadership and narrative shaping, and collaborative solutions and impact.

Over the next 18 to 24 months, SANEA is targeting five strategic priorities, namely strengthening its operating model, enhancing visibility and influence, thought leadership and convening, membership and sponsorship growth and professional development and skills.

The association is looking to increase its reach tenfold by 2030.

While membership has remained relatively stable and increased in some instances, there is a definite gap in youth participation and many current members are set to age out in the future.

Moreover, while the association is perceived to be credible, many members are not engaged with it, and several are unaware of what it actually does.

Other areas of focus for SANEA this year include implementation of its marketing strategy and website revamp, skills work with Wits REAL, a podcast series in partnership with Kani Development Solutions, hiring a full time programme manager, integration of interns from the Energy and Water Sector Education Training Authority, launching a mentorship programme, revamping membership categories and increasing partnerships and sponsorships.
